We hope this checklist will help you decide confidently when

when choosing a Daycare/Preschool for your child.

              1. How and What Are The Kids Learning?      

Is the program based on age appropriate development activities?

Yes   /   No
Does the curriculum prepare children for Kindergarten based
on the Nevada State standards for school readiness? Yes   /   No

Does the curriculum provide opportunities for children to explore

topics in detail, and in multiple ways? Yes   /   No

Does the curriculum take into account the various learning styles,

cultures, disabilities and languages of the children and their families? Yes   /   No
How varied are the activities? Yes   /   No
Does the class follow a daily schedule that offers a variety of
activities? Yes   /   No
Are reading and writing skills practiced every day? Yes   /   No
Does the program emphasize school readiness skills compliant
with Washoe County? Yes   /   No
Will the school provide a record of growth and progress for your child? Yes   /   No
                                          1a. WHAT DO YOU SEE/FEEL?      
Do you see evidence that the teachers use a variety of methods
to teach letters, numbers, shapes, and new vocabulary words? Yes   /   No
Is an activity and lesson plan posted, and is the teacher following it? Yes   /   No
Do the children appear to be happy and engaged in the activities? Yes   /   No
Is the program basede on age-appropriate development objectives?
Including basic motor skills, senses development, self help skills,
listening, responding and game play? Yes   /   No
Do the children seem to be sharing, playing cooperatively and
working well with one another? Yes   /   No
       2. WHAT ARE THE TEACHERS LIKE?    
Is an activity and lesson plan posted, and is the teacher following it? Yes   /   No
Do the teachers participate in 15 hours or more of in-service training
each year? Yes   /   No
Does the teacher use a well known quality curriculum to guide what
children are taught? Yes   /   No
Do teachers receive program training, support, and on-going training? Yes   /   No
Do teachers use educational resources like curriculum guides,
lesson plans and child development resources? Yes   /   No
                                          2a. WHAT DO YOU SEE/FEEL?    
Are you introduced to teachers on tour? Yes   /   No
Are the teachers warm and caring with the children? Yes   /   No
Do teachers have one on one conversations with children? Yes   /   No
Do teachers work with children individually and in small
groups of three or four? Yes   /   No
When the children are outside are the teachers engaged
and encouraging the children to play? Yes   /   No
                             3. HOW DOES THE FACILITY OPERATE?    
Are parents welcome to drop in without making an appointment? Yes   /   No
Does the teacher have face to face or phone contact with parents
or provide regular e-mail or written reports at least twice a month? Yes   /   No
Does the program hold parent teacher conferences at least twice a year? Yes   /   No
Are there suggested involvement activities for parents? Yes   /   No
